Introduced in 2001, the Dot NAME universal top-level extension is the only one meant for personal websites only. These domain names can include personal or fictional names, nicknames and/or other titles people are known by. Initially, solely third-level registrations were possible, so if you wanted to order john.doe.name, you were supposed to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration process was loosened and 2nd-level registrations were also allowed. Already acquired third-level domain names remained online.
